Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

I was asked to repackage the hardcover edition of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas for the book’s 50th anniversary. Using one of Ralph Steadman’s original illustrations as the foundation, I reimagined the cover with a more modern aesthetic, introducing bright, complementary colors to create a sense of energetic tension that echoed the book’s chaotic spirit.

As someone with naturally messy handwriting, I welcomed the chance to experiment with hand lettering. I tested a range of tools—from bamboo pens to calligraphy brushes—before landing on a fountain pen that delivered the blobby, expressive ink quality I was after. The ink splatters featured on the cover were actually created during this lettering process, adding an organic, spontaneous layer to the final design.
